Biography

Gerald Albright (born August 30, 1957) is an American jazz saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist, and producer, known for his work in contemporary and straight-ahead jazz as well as his collaborations with numerous prominent artists. Born and raised in South Central Los Angeles, Albright developed an early interest in music, initially taking piano lessons before discovering the saxophone, which became his primary instrument. He attended Locke High School, a notable training ground for young musicians, and later studied at the University of Redlands, where he earned a degree in Business Management with a minor in music. During this period, he also expanded his musical abilities by learning bass guitar. Following his graduation, Albright began his professional career as a studio musician, working with a wide range of artists across genres. He contributed to recordings by performers such as Anita Baker, Patrice Rushen, Atlantic Starr, Olivia Newton-John, the Temptations, and Maurice White. He also toured extensively with musicians including Les McCann, Quincy Jones, Whitney Houston, and Phil Collins, gaining recognition for his versatility and musicianship. His ability to perform on both saxophone and bass guitar further distinguished him as a sought-after collaborator. Albright later established himself as a solo artist, releasing multiple albums that helped define his reputation in contemporary jazz. His recordings often feature him playing several instruments, including keyboards and flute, as well as contributing background vocals and production work. Over time, he sold more than one million albums in the United States, earning a reputation as a “musician’s musician” for his technical skill and distinctive sound. In addition to his recording and touring career, Albright has appeared on television programs and participated in major live events, including performances at presidential functions. He has also taken part in collaborative tours such as the Jazz Explosion series, performing alongside other contemporary jazz artists. Beyond music, Albright has been involved in charitable and community activities, supporting organizations such as the NAACP and the American Cancer Society. He is also a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and has contributed to initiatives promoting education and community development. He is married and has two children.
