Aya is of a lineage of shrine maidens. Her mother (Setsuko) sacrifices her poorly performing younger brother (Tatsukuma) to raise Aya as a shrine maiden. Unaware of her true identity, Aya listens to her mother with some hesitation, but eventually her sense of self emerges and she grows into the village's shrine maiden.
